FRIDAY: The break in humidity has arrived, and a beautiful day is on the way. It’ll be a bit warm, but with dew points back to comfortable levels, it is about the best we can expect for the third weekend in July. A sea breeze is expected to kick up in the afternoon, cooling the shorelines. Northern areas may see some upper-level smoke move in around sunset this evening, which may make for a cool photo op.
The only weather bulletin going is a Beach Hazards Statement for cold water conditions for DownEast shoreline areas, which is standard protocol with the weekend's arrival. FRIDAY NIGHT: Radiational cooling is expected to occur with clear skies, and dew points a few degrees lower. Most areas sleep comfortably in the 50s, but protected valleys in the mountains and north may experience a few upper 40s. Fog may develop around lakes, ponds, and rivers. SATURDAY: A weak wave associated with an upper low moving into the region could bring a shower or a low-capped thunderstorm to the areas north of Katahdin later in the afternoon into the evening. Dry conditions are expected elsewhere, with a few fair weather clouds around. High temperatures are in the 70s for the mountains, north, and shorelines, with 80s elsewhere. SATURDAY NIGHT: The aforementioned wave may bring a shower to the mountains and north but is expected to lose what little juice it has while exiting the east. A southwest flow brings in warmer temperatures, and dew points creep up a bit, but still comfortable as temperatures start Sunday in the mid-50s north to low 60s south. SUNDAY: Another fine day with mainly sunny conditions. Temperatures are a bit cooler, with the far north topping out in the low 70s and southern areas in the mid-80s. The UNSETTLED PERIOD begins Tuesday and may linger through the rest of the week. Showers and storms are possible as the upper ridge offshore battles with the trough to the north, and our region is caught in the middle. Expect dew points to rise back up into the 60s and low 70s. PTW is a labor of love, but that comes at a price that is at the expense of time and resources.
