So far, so good for the storm underway. As of 4:45 AM, southern areas have picked up ±½” of much-needed rainfall. Confidence remains moderate that a general 1-2” will be received over a good portion of the region through Sunday morning. As mentioned on the website post yesterday, northern areas will be dealing with dry air, which will cut totals to between ¼-¾” by the time it ends. The snowfall idea holds for the mountains, with upwards of 3” for the valleys and 3-6”+ for the higher peaks in the ski hills. What is encouraging is that Mount Washington’s temperature at 5 AM was 21°, which shows that the upper-level cold is entrenched. The Whites could easily pick up 1-2 feet out of this. Katahdin could also pick up 12-18”. Great news for ski country! We’re awaiting a secondary low to form offshore Saturday morning. That low is expected to spin up towards northern New Brunswick by the wee hours of Sunday morning. This will haul in cold air on a northwest flow, bringing snow showers to the mountains and north and rain showers to eastern areas during the day on Sunday. The storm's proximity will crank the wind, likely producing isolated to scattered power outages in exposed areas. SNOW CHANCES NEXT WEEK… WARNING: The silly season with model ideas is here. One-run model snow charts naturally spread around the media like wildfire, initiated by the reckless and irresponsible. What these ideas have going in favor of them is that cold air will be around to support snow for the interior, but consistency on track is lacking among them. Looking under the hood of the operational output, ensemble ideas also lack agreement, especially next weekend. In the shorter term, northern areas have a fair chance to pick up at least a couple of inches of snow on Tuesday. Beyond that, it’s not fair to speculate, but it's worth staying updated on.
