SYNOPSIS: A blast of fall conditions is on the way to slap us in the face to remind us of what late October should feel and act like. Upper-level ridging and associated surface high pressure pass through the state on Friday. On Saturday, a cold front associated with a deepening upper-level trough works into the region, bringing rain showers that turn to snow showers in the higher elevations Saturday afternoon. Thanks to the northwest flow, cold air funnels into all areas Saturday night into Sunday. The trough passes through the region on Monday.

IMPACTS: Be prepared for gusty northwest WIND from Saturday into Sunday, which may reach 40 mph (50+ mph at higher elevations). This could lead to ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES and increased WILDFIRE RISK.

WIND CHILL temperatures will drop below freezing in the mountains Saturday afternoon and elsewhere by Saturday night. Expect below-freezing wind chills to persist in the mountains through Sunday night and hover around the freezing mark through Monday.

Elevation hikers should be cautious as they may encounter SNOW on the taller peaks of the Whites in the 1-4” range. The snowfall will be higher on the taller hills Saturday into Sunday, and snow showers are possible early Monday before the trough exits.

FRIDAY: Eastern areas see clouds and feel a breeze early as an ocean low passes through Cape Breton on its way to Newfoundland, but the sky should clear out, and wind speeds drop by early afternoon. A sunny day elsewhere, with increasing clouds later in the day over western areas. High temperatures range from around 50° north to 60° south.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy conditions statewide. A southwesterly breeze develops ahead of the cold front. Low temperatures in the low to mid-30s over the interior, 35-40° closer to the shorelines.

SATURDAY: The mountains and north have the best chance for isolated to scattered rain shower activity, with dry conditions elsewhere. The northwest wind increases through the afternoon in the wake of the front. By around midday, high temperatures peak in the mid-40s north to low 60s south and fall through the afternoon.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Snow showers are possible in the mountains, with flurries possible in the north. Continued breezy. Low temperatures range from the mid-20s north to the mid-30s south. Wind chill values range in the teens and 20s.

SUNDAY: The chance for snow showers continues in the mountains, with flurries possible in the north. The northwest wind slowly begins to settle in the afternoon. High temperatures range from the mid-30s north to the mid-50s south, with wind chill values in the 20s and 40s.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Snow shower/flurry activity over the mountains and north begins to taper off. The northwest breeze continues to settle down. Low temperatures fall into the 20s everywhere, with wind chill values in the teens to low 20s.

MONDAY: A mainly sunny day for the region, with the northwest breeze diminishing in the afternoon. High temperatures range from the upper 30s over the north and mountains to 50° south.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK: Tuesday will be a sunny day and slightly warmer. A warm front may bring shower potential Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temperatures could reach the low 70s over southern areas for Halloween.
