A cool December continuesI have kept rather meticulous weather data records at the home office in Kennebunk since May 2019. This is undoubtedly the coldest start to December since 2019, when the first eight days ran below average. Looking at the more extended range, the cold will be around. There will be brief warm-ups in some areas on Wednesday and Thursday, but overall, the central theme appears to be that the thermometer stays on the cool side through the month. It's not a matter of whether snow will be on the ground for Christmas, but a question of how much. For Monday, cold air pours back into the area, the clipper that passed through the region Sunday night intensifies, and high pressure to the west moves in. Expect wind chill values well below zero in the mountains and single digits above along the coast, as the northwest breeze gusts between 20 and 30 mph, with higher speeds at higher elevations. The windmill settles down on Monday night, with single digits above and below zero to start Tuesday. A clipper brings light snow Tuesday nightTuesday 7 PM (00z Wednesday) to 8 AM Wednesday (13z) - This is one of those sneaky clippers that doesn't have much in the way of energy that blossoms once it taps into moisture from the ocean. The general idea is for it to move quickly through the region. That will limit snow production from it, but it appears it will bring some to the MidCoast and DownEast areas. The primary focus for snowfall is for the MidCoast and DownEast areas, where a couple of inches are possible. It will be enough to slick the roads up and send the plow crews out for some light clean-up. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing on Wednesday as an incoming runner approaches from the west, which will help improve the surface. About that inside runner...Wednesday 8 AM (13z) to Thursday 7 AM (12z) - The trend with this one has been a bit colder, so I want to put the caution flag out on this one as to what precipitation type may be for the coastal interior. The shorelines appear to be mainly rain. The general idea of total liquid equivalent associated with this system is ¼ - ½", which will be enough to bring a handful of inches of snow over the interior. The coastal front will determine how far inland the liquid extends. Depending on the amount of lift along that boundary, snow may rip on the cold side. Confidence is reasonable that interior areas have slick spots for the evening drive. Snow showers appear likely for the mountains on Thursday. The region cools down and returns to a dry pattern over the weekend. Coastal and western areas may see some light snow on Saturday. PROGRAMMING UPDATE: I will be away Thursday through Saturday. After Wednesday morning, my next update here may not come until Sunday or Monday.
