A messy one Monday that melts away TuesdayMONDAY: Dry air associated with high pressure that blew into the state Sunday has slowed the onset of precipitation by another hour or so. The delay changes the outcome, with a minor adjustment to the snowfall idea, with southwestern areas receiving a bit less and DownEast areas a bit more. It will be rather gnarly, with the wind off the ocean cranking up as the day progresses. Once the surface low closes off and moves along the shorelines later in the afternoon into the evening, a cold shot precedes the system, which will freeze the slop heading into the overnight. BUST POTENTIAL FLAGS ARE EVERYWHERE, which is typical of these late-season storms. Snow ratios in the 6-8:1 closer to the coast bring wet and sloppy compaction, with a 10-12:1 for the mountains and north to bring a drier version. The coastal front will be the feature to watch in the afternoon into the early evening as snowfall rates may hit 1" an hour on the cold side. The sun angle produces solar insolation, which plays a role in the outcome for areas west of the Penobscot, where lesser amounts of snow may pile up. There is the warm front piece where they can under- or overperform with amounts of available moisture. The liquid equivalent ranges from ≤¼" along the Quebec border to ≥¾" along the shorelines, with locally higher or lower amounts possible. PLOWING / SHOVELING IS OPTIONAL as Tuesday's temperatures rise into the 40s/50s. UNSETTLED AT TIMES for the week ahead with upper-level waves passing through the region, keeping clouds and rain/snow shower possibilities over the interior. On Wednesday, an inverted trough may set up and bring some snow to DownEast areas. Upper-level ridging moves in later into the weekend, with an inside runner to watch Monday into Tuesday next week.
