Today's update is presented by Dutch Elm Golf Club in Arundel. Course conditions are fantastic with plenty of afternoon tee times available. SYNOPSIS: High pressure continues to dominate the weather pattern for the day, with a weak upper-level trough moving through overnight. A few isolated showers are possible over northern areas tonight, but the best chance will be tomorrow and Monday as a weak cold front moves through. Canadian wildfire smoke will also move into the region tonight, thanks to northwesterly flow aloft transporting it from the northern plains and the Canadian Prairie. Temperatures cool down a little on Tuesday behind the front as high pressure builds back into the state mid-week. BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT for Penobscot Bay and DownEast area shorelines due to ocean temperatures in the 50s, presenting a hypothermia risk for swimmers and boaters. Remember to have personal floatation devices on the person and on the ready for use. SATURDAY: High pressure continues to remain in control of the weather pattern during the daytime today. This sets us up with sunny skies and temperatures still a little below average. Highs today will be the low to mid-70s across the state. Clouds will start to increase, especially in northern areas, as an upper-level trough approaches. The storm will quickly move through the state during the overnight hours. This will bring the chance for a few isolated showers across northern areas of the state. Lows early tomorrow morning will be in the low to mid 50s, 10° warmer than this morning out north! SUNDAY: The Canadian wildfire smoke moves into the state on Sunday. Some smoke may make its way down closer to the surface, which may worsen air quality, but we won't have a good idea of this until later today when some of our models are in range. Otherwise, the big weather story will be a cold front approaching the state around the late afternoon/evening time frame. The cold front has slowed down in recent model runs, so that shower chances will be a little later in the day. The timing for rain looks to be around the late afternoon/evening, with rain chances decreasing overnight due to a lack of surface heating from the sun. EARLY TO MID NEXT WEEK: The cold front moves into the state on Monday and dies out during the day. This brings more shower chances to central and northern areas. The cold front will lower temperatures for the north with highs in the 70s there on Monday. Elsewhere ahead of the front, temperatures will be in the mid-80s across the southeastern half of the state. High pressure starts moving back into the state Monday night. High pressure settles over the region by mid-week and will dominate the weather pattern for the rest of the work week, with sunny skies and seasonable temperatures. Hopefully, we won't go on too long without rain for the central and southern areas, as they are starting to dry up after below-average rainfall in July. Enjoy the nice weather this weekend and hopefully skies will be clear enough for some beautiful sunsets tonight! - Daniel Temperature outlook through FridayToday's update prepared by Penn State student intern |
