A potpourri of things to start the weekendBEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT for the Penobscot Bay / DownEast regions due to ocean temperatures below 60°F. Swimmers should use caution in the water due to hypothermia risks, and boaters would be wise to wear personal flotation devices. Expect these statements to continue through the weekend and into next week with heat on the way. HIGH FIRE DANGER for the ocean shoreline regions and coastal interior. The afternoon sea breeze could be a gusty one. A situation developed in South Sanford late Friday afternoon, where it was reported that a truck took out a utility pole, flipped on its side, and its fuel caught fire and spread rapidly into wooded areas. Much of the state is a tinderbox. Any unattended fire could quickly spread with even a slight breeze to help fan it. Use caution with outdoor grills, smokers, and campfires. SYNOPSIS: An upper-level trough over the northeast and associated surface high gives the region one more reasonably comfortable day. An upper-level ridge moves into the area later in the day, and sets the table for heat and humidity to work in starting Sunday and continuing through midweek. An upper-level trough begins to chip away at the heat dome on Wednesday, bringing some relief to the north and mountains, along with the risk of afternoon potluck showers and the threat of strong-to-severe storms through the rest of the week. THE THREAT OF LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL is possible over the mountains and north on Saturday afternoon as a weak disturbance rides along the incoming ridge. Pulse showers/storms may develop and dump rain. With little forcing in the atmosphere, any pop-ups that form will take time to drain out. This situation occurred in Coos County, New Hampshire, on Friday evening, where a slow-moving storm dropped 3-5" of rainfall based on radar estimates, and initiated a flash flood warning. A RATHER STIFF SEA BREEZE develops over the coastal plain that will kick in around late morning/early afternoon with high pressure positioned off to the east. It appears gusty enough to fan the flames in the event of a fire breaking out, and blow around beach umbrellas. It would be wise to nail down any objects that could become airborne. It will also bring cooler temperatures to the shoreline region and the adjacent interior, with the ocean temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s. With the heat dome moving into the region Sunday, the influence of the sea breeze remains confined to the shorelines. Expect heavy traffic associated with summer tourism, along with heat relief seekers for the coastal communities. With the high tide in the afternoon this week, expect room at the beaches to be limited.
