Welcome to the first day of astronomical winter! The shortest day of the year for daylight is shaping up to be the coldest in the young meteorological season thus far. On the heels of overnight snow for some parts of the state, the wind picks up and brings the bite through Sunday. Wind chills could feel like a slap to the face, so dress accordingly. Snow showers are possible for the day to add a bit of a holiday feel. Many areas over the interior are on their way to the temperature basement over the next two nights, with many areas below zero by Monday morning. From that point, the mercury is expected to rise slowly throughout the week. The next snowmaker in the pipeline is a clipper that may have some spice that moves in Monday night into Christmas Eve. With the cold air entrenched over the region, the fluff factor on this one could be on the generous side. Areas seeing brown ground could see it turn to white if the forecast stays on track as this sidearm fastball passes through the region. MidCoast/DownEast areas could see some enhancement from the ocean, which could boost totals there. Given the holiday activity, be mindful of the potential for slow travel and slick conditions and plan accordingly. While this idea is not a lock, it does look promising and has support from other guidance. Stay warm and stay tuned!
