The forecast track has nudged northward, increasing the chance for 6” or more snow in the warning area and 3-7” in the advisory areas. Coastal counties like Sagadahoc, Lincoln, and Knox may receive warnings if the track continues north. As of the time of this post, at around 6 AM, it’s close. THE TIMING of the snowfall remains on track to kick off around midnight over the south and taper to snow showers by early afternoon. Eastern areas have a narrower window, starting around 3-4 AM and tapering to snow showers between noon and 2 PM. The mountains begin around 1-2 AM, and snow showers continue all day and into Sunday night, with another round for Monday. THIS WILL BE ANOTHER FLUFFERNUTTER. The BUFKIT profile of the NAMNEST, looking specifically at Sanford, which I have anointed to explain the horizontal view of the atmosphere, shows the predicted snow-to-water ratios. It also indicates where snowfall rates could exceed 1”/hour between 4-8 AM Sunday. With little wind, a relatively deep snow growth region, and plenty of cold air, fat flakes rule much of the event. The total liquid involved ranges from a few hundredths of an inch over the far north, a tenth to ¼” for the west, central, and east, to ¼-½+” for Fryeburg to L/A to Rockland and south. The forecast challenge will be the high snow-to-water ratios over the south and dry air to the north, potentially throwing a wrench in limiting snowfall. This is where you find the bust potential on the high and low ends. Some parts of York County may see a foot of fluff. Some areas to the north and east may come in with the under. SUNDAY MORNING TRAVEL FOR SOUTHERN & MIDCOAST AREAS is likely to be challenging given the cold temperatures, snowfall rates in the 1”+ range into mid-morning, and the icy nature of the snow. Conditions will likely improve in the afternoon, but snow showers may persist. I don’t expect wind to be much of a concern for blowing and drifting until Monday.
