Particle pollution levels are expected to rise into the Unhealthy range for our Northern region and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range for the Western Mountains and Western Interior regions on Sunday. BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT for the Penobscot Bay / DownEast shorelines. With water temperatures in the 50s at the beaches up north, it does not take long for hypothermia to set in for those who dive in. Anyone doing any activities at the water should plan accordingly and remember… Always wear your life jacket! SYNOPSIS: High pressure continues to dominate the weather pattern for the day, as a weak cold front approaches. A few showers are expected overnight and early Monday morning in the north as a cold front moves through. Canadian wildfire smoke also invades the region today, making for hazy skies, which will limit the high temperatures a little today. The smoke slowly trickles out on Monday as the cold front passes through the state. Temperatures cool down a little on Tuesday behind the front as high pressure builds back into the state mid-week, keeping things sunny and dry for the rest of the work week. SUNDAY: The biggest story for the state today will be more wildfire smoke intruding from the Midwest and Canadian Prairie. This will make for hazy skies, though this might provide for some beautiful sunsets this evening. Air Quality Alerts are already in effect for most of the state, with reduced air quality expected from the wildfire smoke today. A weak cold front will be approaching the state and enter overnight. This will bring a few showers to the northern areas overnight, but with reduced instability today, the thunderstorm risk is very low. Today will be slightly warmer than yesterday, but not by much, thanks to the smoke blocking some sunlight. Highs will range from the high 70s in the northwest to the mid-80s in the southeast. MONDAY: The smoke will slowly move out of the state as the cold front moves through, with winds coming in from the north behind. The cold front will continue to weaken as it moves through the state, so rain chances have come down to the point where they are not expected, but a few isolated showers are still possible. Temperatures will continue to climb in the southeastern half of the state, where the front hasn’t moved through yet, with highs in the mid-80s. In the northwestern half of the state, behind the front, temperature will be about 10°F cooler with highs in the mid-70s. THE WORK WEEK: High pressure builds in behind the cold front on Tuesday and will dominate the weather pattern for the rest of the work week. Temperatures will cool off a little on Tuesday as a cooler air mass settles in. Thanks to all of this, the weather for the rest of the work week will consist of sunny skies and low humidity. Little to no rain is expected for the rest of the work week. Some models are hinting at another system for the weekend, but there is too much disagreement amongst them right now. We’ll wait until we see more consistency to forecast for next weekend. Stay safe with the smoke out there today. Hopefully you’ll get to see a beautiful sunset tonight with the hazy skies! -Daniel Temperature outlook through SaturdayToday's update prepared by Penn State student intern |
