Chances are good for a white Christmas for allBITTER COLD START to Sunday, and it gets colder to start Monday. The difference between the two mornings is that the wind drops Sunday night, allowing temperatures to drop a few degrees more. After Monday morning’s low point, temperatures slowly rise throughout the week. SNOW MONDAY NIGHT into CHRISTMAS EVE freshens the ground in places that have it and will make it feel more like the holiday in places that don’t. This setup has a high snow-to-water ratio. The actual water content predicted here is a tenth to three-tenths of an inch. The cold air around raises the ratio to 15-20:1. As a minus with the cold air comes the concern of the bone-dry dew points potentially eating away at suggested liquid equivalent amounts, which presents a potential bust on the low end. As the weak clipper enters the Gulf of Maine, the seasonably warm ocean temps could enhance the snowfall for the MidCoast and DownEast areas as it departs to the east. TIMING: Snow develops Monday night into the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Steady snow tapers off over the south and west by daylight, with off-and-on snow showers possible throughout the day. The north sees steadier snow shift to snow showers by midday. DownEast areas may see snow continue throughout the day, changing to snow showers by early evening. There are hints of an inverted trough that could bring snow showers to the Penobscot Bay east for Christmas. THE WIND may fetch up a bit Christmas Eve into Christmas, more noticeable along the shorelines, which may blow the fluffy snow around, but overall impacts appear minor. EXTENDED OUTLOOK appears on the dry side throughout the holiday week. A weak upper-low may trigger snow showers over the southwest Thursday night into Friday, but it appears minor for accumulation, and forecast confidence is low for now. Beyond that, folks preparing outdoor New Year's Eve events may want to keep a chance for rain in the back of their minds for now and stay tuned.
