Late season snow / mix for MondaySNOW/MIX FOR MONDAY: These late-season snow events are a brain teaser, and this one is no exception. Short-term models have amped up snow totals, but they may be overcooking the outcome due to the lack of factoring in the sun angle, as this is a daytime event and may also be dealing with convective feedback issues downstream. Another factor is the idea of the developing surface low and the timing of that closing off. Since the system is a shoreline hugger, it draws moisture off the 39° ocean temperature and throws it into cold air on land in a typical counter-clockwise manner. Since this is a warm front, there is always a concern of a bit of a surprise, as they tend to either over- or underperform. The system has slowed down on development, which throws another wrench into the forecast, along with banding that may bring locally higher amounts. The coastal plain into the western foothills has the best chance for a bit of junk (sleet and/or freezing rain). With an onshore flow, the shorelines may start as light snow/junk or rain but may see a few flakes as a parting gift, especially for DownEast areas, as the end time comes after sunset. ONSET TIMING: The morning commute appears precipitation-free, or western areas begin to see the start. By noon, precipitation overspreads the west, south, and MidCoast, spreading into eastern regions in the early afternoon and reaching the north for the evening drive. END TIMING: Precipitation ends over the south and west by 7-9 PM, MidCoast, Bangor, and Bar Harbor areas by 8-10 PM, eastern Washington County by 1-2 AM, and the north by 4-6 AM Tuesday. EXPECT AREAS OF SLICK TRAVEL and plan accordingly. PLOWING / SHOVELING IS OPTIONAL as Tuesday's temperatures rise into the 40s/50s.
