Snow possible Sunday night

Picture
SUNDAY starts breezy and chilly. As the storm well to the north heads further into the Arctic Circle, the wind speed slowly continues to subside. Clouds increase along the Quebec border region heading into the afternoon, where snow showers are possible. High temperatures range from the mid-20s for the far north to the low 40s for the far south. Westerly winds gust in the 20-30 mph range knock the ambient temperature down 5-10°.

SUNDAY NIGHT is where it gets interesting. A weak area of low pressure develops in the Gulf of Maine off the southwest coast. The trailing energy over Manitoba earlier in the day is expected to arrive overnight. The two combine and develop light snow. The operational ideas dismiss this as a weak wave with an inch or less accumulation.

In contrast, the short-term models indicate the potential for 1-3" snow from Jackman to Millinocket south to Fryeburg to Portland. The thought may be that the trailing energy will pick up some juice from Lake Ontario and then get a bump with the low ahead of it over the ocean as the two come together in the wee hours of Monday. For commute planning purposes, expect slick travel that may take extra time as a precaution, and we'll see what happens. Low temperatures fall back in the single digits north to the mid-20s south.

Any early morning snow on MONDAY exits the south by 8 AM and the Penobscot Bay region by 11 AM. The sky clears out, and a northwest breeze picks up in the afternoon, settling by evening. High temperatures range from around 30° for the far north to around 50° for the far south.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK features an upper-level ridge moving in on TUESDAY, bringing 40s and 50s with a southwesterly flow. A cold front passes through TUESDAY NIGHT, which may bring a snow shower to the hills. A much cooler day is on tap for WEDNESDAY, with temperatures 10-20° lower than Tuesday. Temperatures begin to head northward later in the week.

A strong upper-level ridge is expected to move into the region next weekend, bringing the potential for a soaker with flooding concerns from Sunday into Monday. Stay tuned for more on that.
