#Maine #MEwx THURSDAY August 21st Update… ONE MORE DAY OF SHOWERS AND COOL TEMPERATURES as the upper low heads northeast. Northern areas have a better chance for showers. The further south and east, the lesser of the chance. An atmospheric sounding conducted by NWS Gray Wednesday evening noted the freezing level at 7,804’, and the 5 AM Thursday temperature on the summit of Mount Washington at 37° reflects that heading into the day. As the surface warms, steep temperature lapse rates form again, bringing clouds and showers and the risk of a low-capped loud thunderstorm, which could bring gusty wind and small hail. Also, there is the risk of land and waterspouts, given the dynamics here, as were reported to me and the National Weather Service yesterday. THURSDAY NIGHT: Showers and any storms end south of the mountains as the surface cools down and clouds dissipate. Clouds and a few showers remain possible for the north as the upper low departs. Areas of patchy fog are possible. Another cool night ahead with low 40s in protected areas and 50s elsewhere. FRIDAY: Northern areas may start off with a few showers and clouds, which will end by late morning. Warmer and drier air works into the region as the upper low heads northeast. Some popcorn cumulus appears likely to develop, which could produce a sprinkle/light shower over the higher elevations. Expect it to be on the breezy side with the northwest flow. Gusts in the 20-30 mph range are possible. High temperatures climb back up to near average, in the 70s. SATURDAY: Surface high pressure moves in, bringing a pleasant, mainly sunny day statewide. Temperatures warm up into the mid to upper 70s for the mountains and north and 80s for the south and east. Expect a sea breeze to develop along the coast, cooling temperatures there in the afternoon. SUNDAY: Another upper low begins to sink in from Hudson Bay and brings a cold front out ahead of it. The mountains and north may see showers, with a potential thunderstorm in the afternoon. High temperatures again will be in the 70s north and the mountains, with 80s elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK: The upper low is expected to stay just west of the region and drift southeast. Shower chances appear likely statewide on Monday. Tuesday brings an isolated chance for a shower as upper-level ridging moves in for Wednesday. Temperatures appear to run close to normal.
