Summertime, summertime, sum- sum- summertimeBefore I get into it, I need to say how proud I am of Jenna, Trey, Harry, and Daniel for their efforts this summer. It's been a few years since I worked with students, and I am reminded how important mentorship is. PTW is a dream come true for me, and to be able to pass on insight and knowledge is a huge blessing. I never thought when I began my forecasting pursuits in 2012 that my journey would take me here. Not bad for a kid who used to hang out with street drunks and who should not be alive. DROUGHT MONITOR updates this morning between 8-9 AM, and it will expand into Maine and worsen in spots. Lack of rainfall is a growing concern. As of the end of July, 151 dry wells have been reported to the Maine Emergency Management Agency, and this number will likely increase. Conservation is very important at this point for those who depend on groundwater resources. Long-time followers will remember when I ran out of water back in 2016 with my well that was drilled 420 feet down while living in Poland. With three ladies in the house, that was a nightmare. RAIN CHANCES will be minimal through the middle part of next week. The mountains may pick up a sprinkle or a light shower as the heat dome moves in over the weekend, but as Bugs Bunny says, "That's all, folks". There is a signal for more chances for rainfall heading into next weekend as upper-level ridging begins to collapse, but the harsh reality here is that we are in a potluck shower and thunderstorm season. Given the blocky pattern we are in, long wave juice streams from the south are not able to form. While the tropics are showing life, the blocking over the Atlantic may not allow remnants to sneak in right away. While ensemble ideas show precipitation, where it falls, and how much, it's a lottery ticket. SMOKE will creep back into the region with a blocking high pressure anchored over the area. The Maine DEP has already flagged Friday for moderate particle pollution statewide. Looking at the upper air pattern, the chance for smoke diminishes over the weekend as upper-level ridging cuts off the haze. THE SAUNA returns starting Sunday and will hang around for several days. I am seeing ideas of heat indices hitting triple digits over interior areas. While it may be premature to predict a heatwave, the temperature outlook below indicates a strong chance for it. The beaches will be jammed, and available real estate there will be limited with afternoon high tides next week. Plan accordingly.
