Winter set to arrive on timeThe system that brought rain and snow overnight to the region heads for Newfoundland. Cloud cover breaks up over the south and east, but the mountains and north may linger in the clouds and deal with snow showers through the day. As the departing storm intensifies on its way out, a decent breeze kicks in and drags cold air into the region. High pressure over northern Manitoba races to the southeast ahead of low pressure over the northern plains. The energy from that system transfers over the Atlantic, and fires up a storm on Friday. The Saturday sideswiperThursday 7 PM (00z Friday) to Sunday 7 AM (12z) - The storm fires off the coast of the Carolinas Friday morning and is full send on its way to Newfoundland. The sharp upper-level trough does a good job holding most of the moisture to the south and east of the region, but is close enough to bring snow showers and flurries across most of the area, with plowable potential in the offing for eastern areas of the state. Important to note here that the heavier snowfall is currently forecast to lurk within 30 to 60 miles of the shoreline which makes this a bit close for comfort, as a slight jog of the track to the west could bring measurable snow further down the the coast. With the cold air building in between Thursday and Friday, this makes it an all snow event. Washington County has the best chance see a few inches of snow that will blow around and could make travel on Saturday a bit of a challenge as the wind speeds pick up as the storm intensifies on its way northeast. Looking at ensemble ideas in the southwest coast, there is roughly about a 30-40% chance of an inch or more of snow possible, so there is that chance of a the track jogging to the west. For those depressed of the lack of snow for Christmas, there is a bit of hope that there could be a few flakes on the ground. There may be another opportunity for light snow Christmas Eve. Stay tuned. Three dog and extra log nights aheadFriday 7 PM (00z Saturday) to Christmas 7 PM (00z Thursday) - Looking at one idea of apparent temperature from the Canadian GEM operational model simply to note the arrival of winter on time for solstice on Saturday that will linger through the holiday. The dogs will be battling for space on the bed in order to keep warm, and wood burners will need to keep the stoves stoked. Below zero and single digit above zero wind chills are the likely theme across much of the state until warmer air noses in from the southwest later in the week. Bundle up.
