Snow to impact travel through the afternoon
into the evening

Picture
IMPACTS: Travel conditions deteriorate in the afternoon. Snowfall rates may reach an inch an hour early into the event, reducing visibility and piling snow up at a moderate to heavy pace before turning lighter. Expect travel to be slow and allow for plenty of extra time. Conditions gradually improve as precipitation ends later in the night and into early Friday.

PRECIPITATION: It starts as snow everywhere. For interior areas, it may end as a trace amount of freezing drizzle for all but the far north and as rain along the coastal shorelines. The general idea of 2-5” snowfall remains consistent statewide, with a few areas potentially reaching 6” (taller ski hills, SW coastal interior). Roughly ¼-½” of liquid equivalent is involved, with snow consistency starting as dry and becoming wetter before ending for areas south and east of the mountains.

START TIME: Snow is on track to begin for Sanford and Fryeburg by 10 AM; Portland, Lewiston, and Rumford by 11 AM; Rockland, Augusta, and Rangeley by Noon; Jackman, Bangor, Greenville, and Eastport areas by 1-3 PM; and Houlton, Presque Isle, and Fort Kent between 3-5 PM.

END TIME: Precipitation ends for Sanford, Fryeburg, Portland, Rumford, Augusta, and Rockland between 7 to 9 PM; Skowhegan, Rangeley, Greenville, Bangor, and Eastport between 10 PM and Midnight; and Houlton, Presque Isle and Fort Kent between Midnight and 3 AM Friday.
Snow showers will continue along the Quebec border region until midday Friday. The County runs the risk of snow squalls through early afternoon.

TEMPERATURES are expected to rise as the warm front moves in from the south. The coastal shoreline areas may break freezing late afternoon into the early evening, but that window may be narrow, in the 2-3 hour range, as cold air returns on the backside. Expect teens and 20s to start Friday, with 20s and 30s for highs, but those will be muted with wind chill values knocking 10° off of those.

WIND: A breeze from the southeast picks up during the day, more noticed along the shorelines and the mountains. After the passage of the warm front, the wind shifts to the southwest overnight and becomes gusty in the 20-30 mph range. The wind shifts to the west on Friday morning, then to the northwest on Friday afternoon, and continues into Saturday.

THE NEXT ONE: Guidance ideas have moved south for now. Southern Maine still has a reasonable chance for 4-8”, with lesser amounts to the north, as I mentioned in the video posted last evening on Facebook. Folks traveling south and flying in and out of Logan should be mindful of the impact there. Models have been poor lately in these back-to-back events, so it’s still early in the ballgame to figure that out. A clearer picture should come on Friday.
