THURSDAY: A weak ridge overhead starts the day but moves to the east as a trough from the west moves in. A mix of sun and clouds with a flurry possible for the mountains and north, a mainly sunny day to the east, with clouds increasing over the south and west as the day progresses. The windmill takes a break as high pressure turns the breeze off. THURSDAY NIGHT: Cloud cover continues to expand over the state. A weak surface low is expected to develop over the Gulf of Maine heading into Friday morning that may bring snow showers to the shorelines heading into the day. FRIDAY: Snow showers remain possible for the shorelines through the morning before the surface low heads east. Otherwise, mainly dry and calm wind conditions with a mix of sun and clouds are expected. WEEKEND OUTLOOK: The breeze from the southwest picks up Friday night and brings milder air into the region. Clouds increase on Saturday morning. Snow and/or rain showers are expected to break out Saturday afternoon. Expect a breezy day as wind speeds increase, gusting 20-30 mph over the interior and 30-40 mph along the coast. The well-advertised Arctic cold front passes through Saturday night, which may cause a few slick spots from rainfall as temperatures fall into Sunday morning. Expect a cold and breezy day for Sunday as the cold funnels into the area. EXTENDED OUTLOOK: Low pressure is expected to form well to the south and east of the region heading into MLK Day. Washington County shoreline areas may pick up an inch or two of snow on the holiday, whereas the rest of the region sits in the freezer with biting wind. The coldest air of the season thus far hangs out through much of the week, which will likely bring cold weather advisories and/or warnings as wind chill values will reach freezer burn levels Tuesday and Wednesday before modifying slowly heading into the latter part of the week. No major systems are in sight, and that is fine, as dealing with the cold will be enough for now. A one page source for all things Maine weatherPTW is looking for business partners |
