Drier and cooler to start the weekend,
heat returns early next week

Picture
A cold front will move in from the west Thursday afternoon, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms. Some storms have the potential to be strong to severe. Behind the front, a much drier air mass will settle in for the holiday on Friday, delivering pleasant weather.  As the weekend progresses, temperature and humidity will gradually rise, with shower chances mainly limited to the mountains by Sunday. Another cold front will approach the region on Sunday and stall over the area on Monday.

A few showers for the north and mountains on the Fourth

Picture
An upper-level low-pressure system will move across the region on Friday, bringing increased instability due to cooler air aloft and daytime heating. This will lead to a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly across northern and central areas. Some storms may lead to small hail. However, most areas will remain mostly to partly sunny and dry. Temperatures will be slightly cooler compared to Thursday, with highs around 70 degrees in the north and mid-to-upper 70s in the south. As the upper-level low moves southeast of the region Friday night and high pressure builds to the southwest, the night will turn mostly clear and seasonably cool. Temperatures will be in the 50s, with some areas in northern valleys dropping down to the upper 40s.

A typical Maine summer day on Saturday

Picture
High pressure will build to the south, bringing a mostly sunny and warm day, with inland highs climbing just above 80 degrees. Humidity levels will remain comfortable, making outdoor activities pleasant for most. By Saturday night, a cold front will move in from the northwest as the surface high shifts eastward into the Atlantic. The tightening pressure gradient between the departing high and the incoming cold front will lead to an increasing southwesterly breeze. Northern areas may see a few scattered showers as model guidance suggests that a weak disturbance may ride along the northwest flow aloft.

Temps and humidity climbs on Sunday

Picture
A cold front is expected to move into the region on Sunday, bringing showers and scattered thunderstorms, primarily to northern areas. A southwesterly breeze will be present throughout the day, especially along the coast, with gusts reaching 20 mph. High temperatures will continue to rise, particularly in the south, with temperatures expected to reach around 90 degrees. Dew points will be in the mid-60s across the region, creating a humid feel. As the front pushes southward on Sunday night, it will begin to weaken and stall as it encounters high pressure to the southeast, which will start to merge with the subtropical high. With the cold front lingering over the area, a continued chance of showers is expected Sunday night.

Slow moving frontal boundary enters the region Monday

Picture
Monday 2 AM (06z) to Tuesday 2 AM (06z) - Model guidance indicates a weather disturbance moving along the cold front on Monday, potentially maintaining shower chances throughout the area and bringing possible thunderstorms around midday and into the afternoon. The highest chance of showers remains in the northern portion of the state and the mountains, as a marginal risk for excessive rainfall has been issued by the WPC. Flooding is possible in areas that receive locally heavy rain. High temperatures are expected to be similar to those on Sunday, with southern regions forecasted to reach temperatures ranging from the high 80s to the low 90s. In comparison, northern areas are anticipated to experience temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the high 70s. Humidity will continue to remain high in the south, but the north may feel some relief from these humid conditions.

Boundary expected to slowly move through Tuesday,
cooler temperatures midweek

Picture
Tuesday 2 AM (06z) to Wednesday 2 AM (06z) - The cold front is expected to begin weakening and dissipating on Tuesday. However, some isolated showers will still be possible, mostly over southern areas. Temperatures will start to cool down, ranging from the mid-70s up north to the high 70s to low 80s down south. By Wednesday, a weak high-pressure system is expected to settle over the state of Maine. It is unlikely to be strong enough to clear all the moisture from the air, so some clouds and isolated showers may persist. Variable cloudiness and a chance of isolated showers may continue into Thursday.
