The cold front that passes through the region Thursday night and trailing high pressure sets the table for Saturday into Sunday. What is known is that this will be a messy mix of all four precipitation food groups. The mystery is how much of what type comes out of it. Stalled or quasi-stationary boundaries do funky things depending on the development of the disturbances that ride along them. Wobbles of the boundary of 30 miles could bring a different outcome in precipitation type and amounts. Cold air settling in guarantees snow on the northerly end of the boundary. The perimeter sees potential for either snow showers or light accumulation. Closer to the front, more accumulation is expected, perhaps in the 2-5" range (locally higher). Snow-to-water ratios will challenge this forecast, with wetter snow closer to the boundary and the threat of icy, sleety junk. Cold air damming will play a significant factor in precipitation type. Warm air aloft will try to force the issue, with warm noses producing sleet and warm overruns producing freezing rain. Areas south of Jackman and southeast of Bangor have the best chance of accumulating snow. The junk mix threat creeps in from Bethel to Penobscot Bay to the south of that. Southern Oxford, Cumberland, York, and adjacent areas will likely see more junk than snow. TRAVEL IMPACTS on Saturday morning will be a concern. At this point, the idea is that the initial disturbance passes east by early afternoon, with conditions improving later in the day. Still, the southern areas may be dealing with precipitation all day. Guidance ideas vary in duration. SUNDAY: The boundary gets shoved to the north, but cold air damming will play a role. Another day of junk will have freezing rain and sleet potential. The coastal plain warms up with rain showers in the afternoon. Freezing rain will likely concern the western foothills/mountains and northern areas well into Sunday night and perhaps Monday morning. More fine-tuning to come. Stay tuned!
