Before I get into it, I’m thinking of those down south who have been hammered yet again. Two major hurricanes in two weeks is horrifying to comprehend. These folks will need our financial support through whichever relief program you can contribute to. The most challenging thing I have found as a forecaster is that you see the train coming and hope people listen to the whistle and take the necessary action. It’s been a rough couple of weeks watching all of this, knowing full well that lives and livelihoods and homes would be lost, geography rearranged, and damages in the billions of dollars that will take years to repair. Meanwhile, the weather continues during the recovery process. OUTLOOK: The upper low that has hung around the region over the past couple of days has become vertically stacked, and therefore, it is slowly weakening and will head northeast. Isolated showers are possible as the system departs Thursday into Thursday night. A dry slot works in on Friday. A quick-moving clipper cuts across Canada and brings showers primarily to the north, and light showers/sprinkles are possible elsewhere late Friday night until midday on Saturday. A stiff wind in its wake Saturday afternoon dries the rainfall out and could bring wind gusts in the 30-40 mph range, settling overnight into early Sunday. After a dry start to Sunday, our next system moves in, bringing showers to the south and west Sunday afternoon and continuing into the holiday on Monday. There are question marks around how much rain and mountain snow potential may come from it, but as of the timing of this post early Thursday morning, it does appear that it could be a washout. Expect unsettled conditions with precipitation chances through Wednesday of next week. Cool overnight lows with frost chances are possible Sunday through Friday.
