12/12/2024

Overall, the region has escaped significant power outages with around 91K reported as of 8 AM. Still, those in the North, MidCoast and DownEast areas took the brunt of this one, especially Hancock County, where about 45% had lost service as of 4 AM and Aroostook at around 50% as of 8 AM.

Wind gust reports from NWS Caribou at 3:42 AM Thursday

Wind gust reports from NWS Gray at 7:11 AM Thursday

The rainfall aspect of this appears to have been verified in the 1-3” margin from preliminary reports. As of Thursday morning, the Swift River in West Roxbury has been forecast to be at minor flood stage before falling this afternoon. It will be determined if there will be any issues for the Kennebec in Sydney and Hallowell, but it may only be minor at both locations.

If you are without power and need a warm place to go, the Maine Emergency Management Agency has a list of warming stations available.

FORECAST OUTLOOK… While the strong winds have departed, breezy conditions persist. Surface high pressure moves into the region as the storm from last night heads to Baffin Island. Cold air is expected to pour into the area and bring the risk of mountain snow showers with a few squalls possible. There is a chance that isolated flurries/snow showers/squalls may make it into the coastal plain later in the day. Temperatures gradually fall during the day and overnight. Friday will start bitter cold.

We are in for a dry but cool weekend, with the wind settling by Friday night. Our next chance for precipitation comes Tuesday/Wednesday, and at this point, the system appears to be a garden-variety rain event without much atmospheric drama.
