IMPACTS: Areas of locally dense fog with patchy drizzle may be a PITA in the overnight and morning hours through Tuesday. Showers Friday overnight into Saturday and again Monday into Tuesday may cause some slick spots where there is leaf drop. Frost is possible in most locations away from the shorelines on Wednesday morning. DISCUSSION: A look out to the west with the water vapor image from GOES-18 shows the players involved in our weather in Maine lining up. Strong upper-level ridging over the west and a strong upper low and trough associated with it over Hudson Bay. The anchored ridge holds serve, allowing disturbances to slide through over the top of it. Troughing develops over the northeast as the ridge enhances to the northwest. The result is cooler, more seasonable temperatures on the way, along with chances for rainfall and unsettled conditions next week. Besides a few showers for the far north on Thursday, the region stays dry through Friday. Showers break out from west to east Saturday morning and clear the region in the afternoon. On the backside of the front, a northerly breeze develops Saturday afternoon, bringing dry air into the area for Sunday. With the zonal pattern set up and the strength of the ridge in play, rain chances for Monday into Tuesday appear generally light as the moisture stream from the south appears to be cut off. There remains the chance for an ocean low developing, which would favor more rainfall for the state's eastern half. Time will tell, and stay tuned. Troughing digs in with a cut-off upper low pinwheeling overhead Wednesday, continuing through the rest of the week. This brings the risk of showers until it clears out heading into next weekend. Given the dynamics from midweek onward, cooler-than-normal temperatures are expected. Winter is coming, and I could use your support for 2025Always have MULTIPLE ways to receive weather alerts.
