Low pressure offshore brings the humidity,
high pressure to the south brings the heat

Picture
The early morning view from above shows the players on the card table. The low pressure system to the south of Nova Scotia, which the National Hurricane Center has been monitoring for the past few days, is having a party with showers and thunderstorms. Moisture from that is feeding in from the northeast, which is supplying the humidity. A strong anomalous ridge is bringing the heat.

Caribou, Millinocket, and Augusta set new record highs on Monday and will likely do it again on Tuesday.  Relief is coming with shower & storm chances Wednesday and Thursday, but it's tough to get much in the way of meaningful rain with the key source of moisture cut off over the south.

A heat advisory continues, and may extend into Wednesday

Picture
The headlines for Tuesday are the same as Monday. A heat advisory continues for the north and coastal interior. Fire danger is high for all but the north. Air quality is moderate due to the humidity and a touch of wildfire smoke. The sea breeze flow is limited due to high pressure to the south, which will allow temperatures to warm close to the shorelines. The early afternoon tide cuts the available space at the oceanside beaches, so go early and claim your spot above the high water mark.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and exercise early. Those working outside should find shade and take it easy. Monitor your body for heat exhaustion or stroke. For those without air conditioning, the fine folks at the Maine Emergency Management Agency have a list of cooling centers available to take a break.

Given the timing of the cold front on the way, another day of heat appears likely, and heat advisories may get extended into Wednesday.

The best chance for liquid gold comes
Wednesday & Thursday

Picture
A cold front slowly works its way into the region on Wednesday, with the mountains and north having the better chance for isolated showers and a thunderstorm. The Weather Prediction Center has flagged interior areas for a localized flash flooding risk. Still, since most rainfall is expected in the woods, the impact on populated areas is expected to be minimal.

I can't rule out a stray shower over the south and east, but it's doubtful as the timing of the arrival is later in the evening.

Picture
The cold front runs into a temporary road block and brings the risk of a shower or storm over the south and east on Thursday, but the idea at this point is for a widely scattered affair and not all areas will receive rainfall. There could be localized areas that get a fair amount, and I can't rule out a downpour given the humid air mass, but most areas are likely to miss out.

It's a great day for a trip to Popham Beach
and grab an ice cream or dinner on the way home

Outlook and temperatures through Monday

Temperatures are expected to cool down late week, and smoke may enter the region again by Friday. Ridging moves in Saturday to warm the temps back up. The mountains and north have a chance for showers on Sunday as a weak cold front passes through, More comfortable air works in to start next week and is expected to continue for several days, with continued dry conditions.
