One more hot one before relief comesThe heat advisory has been extended for one more day as indices may flirt with 95-100°. Wildfires are popping up, and with the sea breeze picking up in the afternoon as an outflow boundary approaches, any unattended exposed flames could get out of control quickly. There are reports of a flash drought going on all around the state. I am seeing cooler, drier air next week, which will be comfortable to work, play, and sleep with, but adds to the fire concerns. Crops without irrigation are likely to be toast. Town water reservoirs are showing signs of stress, with restrictions going into place. People want to know when rain will come, and I don't have any answers that I can hang my hat on. The drought is bad, and it will only get worse. Wednesday Noon to Thursday 3 AM - The outflow boundary approaches the region in the afternoon and brings potluck showers along with the risk of thunderstorms over the north. Any storms that form may push the low-end severe threshold with gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall. With the sea breeze developing along the shorelines, it diffuses any convective showers or storms due to stable air off the ocean, thus keeping much of the coastal plain dry. The coast gets its chance for showers ThursdayThursday 7 AM to 8 PM - With the main cold front passing through in the afternoon, this will be a "suns out, guns out" situation for rainfall and storm chances. While the predictive model idea appears enticing for those who desperately need rainfall, I throw the caution flag high on this idea. The sea breeze may get the last laugh in this idea as well. Potluck is what it is. The next chance for rainfall comes SundayIn typical fashion, weak shortwaves favor the mountains and north, much like Alberta clippers bring snow showers and flurries in winter. This has been the pattern all summer, and will continue to be. Southern areas may get lucky to get a sprinkle in the afternoon, but not much more than that. There are times for adjustments, but don't be surprised if it trends drier. It's a great day for a trip to Popham Beach |
