CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AND STORMS across much of the region for Wednesday. With an upper-low moving into the area from the west, this is one of the screwier setups where rain showers and storms form track from southeast to northwest with a counterclockwise flow. This could potentially be a “damaging sun” situation where, as it comes out, convective showers break out.

The cold pool I discussed in Tuesday’s update is moving in, acknowledged by the 38° temperature reading on top of Mount Washington at 5:15 AM. With the sub-10,000-foot freezing level, small hail is a strong possibility where storms form and may hammer like heavy sleet in winter. Expect the thunder to be very loud. I don’t expect storms to reach severe limits, but I can’t completely rule it out.

Given the recent rainfall, the Weather Prediction Center has interior areas at risk for isolated areas of flash flooding. Not all areas get wet today. MidCoast / DownEast areas may escape with little to no rainfall, with the southerly flow bringing stable air off the water.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: As the upper low moves in, showers are possible overnight for the Upper Kennebec Valley, Central Highlands, and the North Woods. Low temperatures fall into the upper 40s to mid-50s.

THURSDAY: The upper low is expected to be near Quebec City, bringing a better chance for a shower or storm in the north and the mountains. An isolated shower is possible elsewhere. Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees warmer than Wednesday, in the 60s and 70s.

FRIDAY INTO THE WEEKEND: The upper low departs, bringing warmer, more seasonable conditions to the state on Friday and Saturday. Isolated to scattered showers and storms are expected on Sunday as another upper low moves into the area and will hang around to start next week.
