WEDNESDAY: A fast-moving cold front passes through the region this morning. Showers are expected north of Portland, with far southern areas remaining dry, and are on track to exit western areas before noon and the eastern region soon after. As these briskly move east, drier air sweeps in behind the front, and wind speeds pick up. As the drier air moves in, cloud cover and any areas of fog DownEast clear out in the afternoon. With the northerly wind direction, the north and the mountains are the coolest, with far southern areas the warmest thanks to the downslope. WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Any remaining clouds will clear out in the evening. A surface high settles into the region and diminishes the wind. Expect a crisp, cool night as dew points and temperatures drop into the 40s for interior areas and the low 50s for the coast. Patchy fog is possible around the lakes and rivers. THURSDAY / FRIDAY: The traditional work week wraps up with a mostly sunny sky and seasonably cool conditions with the Canadian high in place. Thursday will be the cooler of the two days, with daytime highs in the upper 60s north to mid-70s south. Thursday night is setting up to be another cool night, with temperatures settling back into the upper 30s in pockets of the north to around 50° at the shorelines. Expect areas of fog around the lakes and rivers. High-pressure slides east Friday morning, allowing for a more southerly flow, which brings temperatures up into the 70s. Friday overnight lows fall back into the 50s. LABOR DAY WEEKEND: A cold front approaches the region Saturday, bringing scattered showers with a chance storm to the west and the north in the afternoon, reaching southern and eastern areas by evening. Shower activity continues overnight and ends Sunday morning. A mini-parade of weak frontal boundaries passes through the region Sunday and Monday, bringing the risk of a shower to two over the west and north, with southern and western areas mainly dry. High temperatures range from the 60s north to the mid-70s south on Saturday, 70s on Sunday, and mid-60s to mid-70s on Monday. Overnight lows range in the mid-50s to low 60s.
