Boundaries swing through late week

Picture
Another upper-level trough will swing over the region tomorrow afternoon along with the associated cold front. Showers and thunderstorms accompany the front with a conditional severe weather threat. Then, cooler, drier air moves in behind the front for a comfortable 4th of July. Then we’re watching for a few pesky showers this weekend as quick bursts of upper-level energy move through. Temperatures are expected to be in the 70s to 80s this weekend, with each day being warmer than the previous one. The warm-up peaks on Monday with temperatures in the 80s and 90s during the day, accompanied by muggy dew points in the 60s. A weak area of low pressure will also move through on Monday with more showers and storms. But high pressure takes control for Tuesday and Wednesday, cooling things slightly but keeping it mostly dry.

Chance for showers and storms Thursday

Picture
Thursday 10 AM (14z) to Friday 1 AM (05z) - Another upper-level trough will swing through the state tomorrow, bringing more unsettled weather. This will come in the form of a cold front that is expected to move through tomorrow afternoon and evening. Showers and thunderstorms will move through ahead of the front, mainly during the afternoon hours. High temperatures in the afternoon are expected to range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s across the state, which will help increase instability slightly. However, it will only be modest in some areas, so we're not expecting numerous widespread thunderstorms. Instead, we'll see scattered showers with a few thunderstorms popping up across the region. Due to the potential modest instability in the atmosphere tomorrow, there is a conditional threat of severe weather, with damaging winds being the primary hazard. Moisture values in the atmosphere will also be slightly lower than they've been this week, which means the atmosphere won't be able to hold as much rain as it could have earlier this week. We're not anticipating a flood threat, but there could still be some heavy downpours, especially in any thunderstorms that develop.

Upper-level energy passes through Friday

Picture
As is typically the case, once the cold front moves through on Thursday, a cooler and drier air mass will follow in its wake. The Fourth of July will be comfortable outside for parades and evening fireworks. High temperatures will be in the 70s across the state, with dew points in the 50s, which is below the 60°F comfort threshold. We'll be mainly dry across the state, but we'll need to keep an eye on the northwest for some quick showers in the late afternoon and early evening. The shower's chances come down by nightfall, so hopefully there won't be any issues with late evening fireworks.

A few showers possible for the mountains and north
over the weekend

Picture
Saturday 8 AM (12z) to Sunday 8 PM (00z Monday) - The weekend will be much like the Fourth, with most of us likely to be dry, but we should keep an eye out for a few quick, pesky showers. A weak warm front will move through the state Saturday night with a few showers possible in the northern tier. Saturday will start to see temperatures warming back up into the 80s, but it will still feel comfortable as dew points remain below 60°F. Sunday marks the return of hot and sticky weather outside again. Temperatures will be in the 80s with a few 90s for the southeast, with dew points in the low to mid-60s. Still watching for a few pesky showers with isolated thunderstorms on Sunday in the northern tier as a quick brush of upper-level energy moves through.

A steamy Monday with a slightly less humid trend
through midweek

Picture
Monday appears similar to Sunday, except it will be a little warmer. Highs will range from the low 80s in the northwest to around 90°F in the southeast. Still keeping an eye out for the chance of a few scattered showers throughout the state as a quick area of low pressure moves through around the afternoon/evening timeframe. Tuesday and Wednesday, however, look to be primarily dry as high pressure dominates the weather pattern. Temperatures will cool slightly on Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs in the upper 70s in the northwest and mid-80s in the southeast. Dew points, however, will be in the low to mid-60s, so it will still feel a little uncomfortable outside.
