The region starts the day in the warm sector ahead of an inside runner area of low pressure that will track along the St. Lawrence River and spin a cold front through Wednesday afternoon. Wind speeds from the west/southwest increase in the morning as the front approaches and could be gusty, reaching as high as 40+mph in the north and higher elevations in the west. Isolated power outages are possible. The NWS Boston/Norton office has posted a Red Flag Warning for Southern New England, and the drier southern parts of Maine could be at risk for wildfire potential. Well above normal temperatures are expected in the 60s north and potentially the low to mid-70s over the south and may establish a new record high for Portland, cloud cover permitting. The cold front passes through the region in the afternoon and may bring some light shower activity over the north and an isolated shower to the south. As the frontal boundary passes, the wind shifts to the northwest, bringing cooler and drier air back into the state. OUTLOOK: The breeze diminishes somewhat on Thursday, but gusts from the northwest in the 20mph range are possible. The wind speed increases again on Friday as another St. Lawrence River low tracks northeast and brings another chance for rain showers in the north. These may end as snow showers as colder air pours in. Wind gusts in the 20-40 mph range are possible Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing isolated power outages and raising wildfire concerns heading into the weekend. A surface high moves in and keeps the region dry over the weekend and reduces the wind. The next chance for showers appears Sunday night into Monday.
