With upper-level ridging dominating our weather pattern for much of September, the gardener’s f-bomb hasn’t been used much, but that will change next week. It is important to note here that the National Weather Service offices in Gray and Caribou will not be issuing frost/freeze bulletins for the western mountains and the north as the areas have passed the 10-day median for the average first freeze. You folks there are at the mercy of the forecast at this point. Most of the rest of the state sees frost/freeze bulletins end on October 11th, and the southwestern areas have that service end on October 21st. For those trying to get the most mileage out of this growing season, it’s time to get the blankets ready if you haven't yet. It will be important to watch the forecast overnight temperatures closely. While Sunday night into Monday morning shows a chance for patchy frost, this signal for Tuesday / Wednesday is stronger for a more widespread chill. It’s early in the ballgame to nail it down, but it is essential to be aware of it. Looking at the long-term temperature forecast, overnight lows in the 30s appear to be the general idea for most of the area away from the shorelines starting next Wednesday and lasting through the following weekend, perhaps longer. The upper-level low and associated trough moving into the region Monday into Tuesday may bring the first snowfall to Katahdin. This may be a messy affair with rain and wind elsewhere from a potential ocean storm, but still early to know for sure. ‘Tis the season for leaf-stripping storms, and we know it will come. Along with the annual event of stacking wood, it’s time to check the generators, give them a tune-up if necessary, and check your storm supplies when power loss occurs. Stay tuned.
