PROGRAMMING NOTE: Due to the mundane conditions, I've taken an extended break to rest, recharge, and attend to personal matters. My wife and I will be celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary in the Lubec region over the weekend. I plan to show some photos/video of the trip here as I embark on a long-overdue photography spree. For those PTW followers in the Eastport/Lubec/Machias region, I'd love to say hello to you. Drop me a message. We will arrive on Friday afternoon and depart on Monday morning. I will return to a more regular posting routine at some point next week. Breezy, dry conditions raise wildfire concernsGiven the Arctic nature of the airmass moving in, the dry air associated with it lowers dew points and relative humidity levels, which sets up an enhanced fire threat on Friday. Northwest winds gusting 15-30 mph, with relative humidity levels in the 30th percentile, may allow any wildfires to spread rapidly. Frost threat over the weekendA clear sky sets up radiational cooling, increasing frost chances on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday will have the better chance for widespread frost, and the growing season in parts of the north may be toast. The position of high pressure will dictate the frost threat on Sunday morning. As of now, it appears patchy. For those managing crops or flowerbeds, it would be wise to cover them up. Dry times to continue indefinitelyDry times are expected to continue through the rest of the month, and long-term outlooks indicate October may be drier than usual at this vantage point. I want to continue to stress to those who depend on groundwater resources the importance of conserving water. It will take double-digit rainfall amounts before ground freeze to get the region out of its deficits. This drought may persist well into winter, and it would be wise to prepare for it.
