9/3/2025

I mentioned in a post on the PTW Facebook page on Tuesday that my wife and I are headed up the coast to spend a couple of days in Lubec on September 19-22. The last time we were there was 15 years ago, and I am pumped to return. For those tuning in from that area, I'd love to connect, whether you are in Eastport, Machias, or in Lubec proper. Send me a message on from one of my social channels or on Patreon and I will let you know the meeting place.

As mentioned last Thursday, I am going more into pattern and storm watch mode through fall. I plan on posting here three to four times a week. When something significant is in the works, I will post daily.

Isolated showers with a storm possible
for interior areas Wednesday

Picture
The ridge to the west extended deep into Alaska, with a deep trough over the central and eastern regions, bringing fall temperatures to the south. The upper low over Ontario, along with another towering ridge over the North Atlantic, will be the key players in our weather over the next few days.

The ridge over the west begins to get hammered by upper lows later in the week and into next week. We'll see the pattern start to shift and hopefully bring better chances for rainfall as we head toward the middle part of the month.

With the high school athletic season underway, it will be crucial for coaches and support staff to stay aware of potential storms. When thunder is heard, it's game over.

While the disturbance working through is weak, there is enough lift that could generate storms with temperatures in the 70s. Given the cool air aloft, any storms that form could generate small hail and gusty winds, along with loud thunder and lightning.

The timing for isolated showers or storms is in the afternoon through early evening.

Rain on the way to close the week and start the weekend

Picture
I continue to laugh at guidance ideas for rainfall in mid to long range. They promise a good amount and then fizzle out like a loud Bronx cheer from the rear church pew. There are ideas out there at this point for the potential for interior areas to pick up 1" or more of rainfall, and I am just not buying it. There is no help from the south since the moisture stream is well offshore. The only way I see that idea validating is if the frontal boundary moves at a snails crawl.

Two waves are expected to pass through the region, one on Friday, another on Saturday. Both waves may feature rumbles of thunder. Some localized areas could pick up an inch or more of rainfall, but for most areas this may end up being a ¼-½" affair, which will be enough to diminish the wildfire threat for a couple of days.

Timing and specifics begin to take shape on Thursday with more details to come.

Strong, deep troughs mean chances for frost

Picture
It's a week out, but worth noting for the gardeners out there. A surface high moves into the region on Monday. While the idea for frost is cloud cover dependent, it is certainly something to be aware of. These forecast temperatures could go down several degrees between now and then. For those growing, it would be good to dig out your coverings this weekend to have them ready just in case.

September is a great time to book a getaway to Spinney's!
