internships

So, you are working toward a career in the weather forecast industry?

Pine Tree Weather offers internships to college level meteorology students, whether they are seeking future employment in the public or private sector, or broadcast media. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to dip your toes in the water, roll up your sleeves, and get the feel of what is required to work in the field in the day-to-day grind.

What does a PTW internship provide?

You will gain true hands-on forecast experience working alongside a Maine forecast and media veteran who is a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador and a National Weather Service partner. You will gain valuable communication and forecast skills which are in high demand for college graduates going into the job marketplace. You will learn how to write forecast discussions, create graphics, and interact with an ever-growing enthusiastic and supportive audience on social media.

Communication is an overlooked skill needed by students in the career field

The one consistent message I hear from media types along with private and public sector managers and recruiters is the need for prospective employees to not only forecast, but also to be able to communicate it clearly and effectively to the end user. Often, recent college graduates have a difficult time gaining employment because this is the one key item missing from their resumes. They may have some stellar internships in the public and private sectors, but with little to nothing to show for written communication skills, graphic design, and social interaction. Having a communication background is key to starting off in the field ahead of the rest of the competition.

Requirements for prospective PTW interns

WARNING... I am going to be incredibly picky about who I select, and if I don't like the applicants, I won't do it. Period. Just because you apply does not mean you will get in. If you have other internship opportunities or summer jobs, bless you, and go do those. They cannot interfere with what I have you do here.

The bottom line: if you don't meet my criteria and cannot honestly do what I require due to other commitments, don't waste my time, or yours.
  • This is a remote experience based on Eastern Time.
  • Three years of completed course studies toward a meteorology / atmospheric science undergraduate degree, which includes synoptic and mesoscale.
  • Must be proficient with PowerPoint for graphics
  • Must have audio/visual capability.
  • Must have active Facebook and Twitter/X accounts
  • You will write out a written discussion. This will include the following: a synopsis; potential weather impacts (highlighting short- and long-term); a 48-hour detailed short-range forecast; and a brief outlook through seven days.
  • You must be a self-starter and highly motivated to do quality work at ANY hour of the day. You must be flexible with your schedule.  Holidays may be required, weather permitting.

SERIOUS APPLICANTS ONLY - SPACE IS LIMITED

Expect the interview process to be intense and thorough. This internship is not for everyone. Expectations will be high, and you will be fairly challenged. Consider this internship boot camp for the real thing.

If you are willing to run through a wall for me, I will do all that I can to support you with letters of recommendation for grad school and job references. If you need this internship for college credit, I will need to contact your advisor (Penn State only). A financial stipend is awarded for quality work.

To send me a cover letter, resume, transcript, and school & personal references, please contact me via the Pine Tree Weather Facebook page.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS APRIL 15th
FOR SUMMER 2026
