Another quiet day and a bit warmer

Picture
Another day of great weather is ahead after a bit of a cool start over the area. The coastal plain will be the cool spot with the onshore breeze. A few clouds pass through over the mountains and north as our next system approaches.

For the water sport enthusiasts, the concern going into the Memorial Day weekend will be the cold-water temperatures. Make sure your boat is properly prepared to keep yourself and your mates safe from the unexpected. Some helpful tips are available here from the US Coast Guard.

Showers with the risk of a thunderstorm possible
for Wednesday

Picture
Wednesday 4 AM to Thursday 2 AM - A few isolated pop-up showers are possible Wednesday morning over the south, west and north. Showers become more numerous over the west and north by midday and slide to the south and east in the afternoon. Precipitation ends from west to east Wednesday evening, with the last of showers tapering off over eastern areas prior to daylight Thursday.

Western and southern interior areas may see some isolated thunderstorm activity given the sharp nature of the front in the afternoon. The severe threat is very low, but still a possibility. When thunder roars, please head indoors to a safe, secure area.

Wednesday 6 AM to Thursday Midnight - The sharp nature of the frontal boundary is highlighted here looking at modeled near surface temperatures. The mercury may drop 10° or more in an hour over interior areas as the front passes through. Temperatures could fall into the 30s in the western mountains by Thursday morning, which may bring threat for patchy frost.

A healthy dose of rain is likely for the north and the western mountains, with lesser amounts to the coast. The front falls apart as it taps into the marine layer, which keeps totals down over the shoreline areas.

Outside of some hit or miss shower activity over the mountains and north Thursday and Friday from an upper-low spinning overhead, this may be the last chance for rain anywhere in the region until June.

Outlook into the Memorial Day Weekend

Folks in the western mountains should be on alert for patchy frost potential Thursday and Friday morning as a cool airmass spins overhead.

A strong ridge is expected to takeover by Saturday which will keep the region dry with warmer temperatures through the unofficial kick-off to summer.
