2019 wraps up as a stormy one for Maine

A day to lie low

Folks with New Year's Eve plans should use their best judgement on how to proceed with them. With the snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain, which will all freeze back up later on, slick spots can be expected. 

The map above is a rough idea on what to expect between 5 AM Tuesday and the end, which will be around time for the ball to drop for the folks in northern areas.

The idea remains the same... mainly snow for the interior areas, mix for the coastal plain. 

As I mentioned in my Facebook post last evening, banding is going to play a role in how this plays out. Seeing reports overnight, some places got hammered with banding that set up overnight. This model loop shows the same idea. Snowfall rates of around 1" per hour for interior areas. Closer to the coast, it could mean sleet, freezing rain or rain. 

As the storm pulls away and cold air filters in behind it, I expect snow showers for the coastal areas as parting gift as the last storm of the year heads into the Canadian Maritimes. 

Southwestern areas can clean up around mid-afternoon. Central areas can get going around dinner time. For northern areas, it will be late evening. 

Along with the snow and mix, comes the wind for the coast.  Isolated power outages are possible. Highest gusts for the mountains & hills, along with the shorelines. 

The next one

Snow showers for the mountains and north Wednesday, a break for everyone Thursday. The first storm of 2020 appears to be a multi-day affair once again. The idea for now is a rain-mix for Friday into early Saturday, with a trailing system that transitions from rain/mix to snow Saturday afternoon into Sunday.
