The beauty of hoar frost

Picture
Below freezing mornings around calm bodies of water emitting lake steam bring a neat weather phenomenon known as hoar frost. It's like rime ice that is referred to in observations on Mount Washington. While this photo that I captured Saturday morning along the Kennebunk River is a light version of it, the spiny nature of the ice crystals forming on whatever it can stick to creates beautiful mid-fall like images such as this. Keep watch on your morning lows into November for more opportunities for photography!

Areas seeing lake steam or fog to start off Sunday morning see it dissipate by mid-morning. Temperatures rise into the 60s for most, a bit cooler on the mountain tops. An afternoon sea breeze chills the shorelines. With low tide mid-morning, a great time to do that oceanside walk is then.

Outlook through the week

Picture
Monday 8 AM to Wednesday 8 AM - A weak frontal boundary is expected to pass through the region from Halloween night into Tuesday. Trick-or-treating activities go off on the mild side and dry, which is great news for those participating. Isolated showers are expected Tuesday. As the front moves east, an upper level ridge moves into the region and keeps the temperatures mild and the area dry through the remainder of the week.
