Sunday night into Monday morning: Severe storm potential

Picture
Starting around 8 PM on Sunday is when severe storms are to potentially begin. Increased instability, moisture, and a lifting mechanism (warm front to the north) help the chances for thunderstorms to initiate in the northern areas during the night, but increased CAPE values (energy in the atmosphere), 0-3 km SRH (associated with storm updraft rotation), and 0-6 km shear (model outputs values around 40 m/s^2, and supercell development is supported at 40 m/s^2) show good evidence of severe storm development Sunday night through early Monday morning.

The GIF above runs from 8 PM Sunday to 8 AM Monday. The northern areas look the most susceptible to severe weather, with surrounding areas possibly receiving ordinary thunderstorms and rain. More information on severe weather potential for Sunday night will be available tomorrow morning on the Facebook page.

Monday: Wicked hot temperatures and high humidity

Picture
Daytime temperatures increase on Monday, and statewide will be in the 80s or higher. Some isolated areas near Bangor may see temperatures in the low 90s as well. Dew points for the northern and central regions are in the 60s, while Down East and Mid Coast regions' dew points are in the 70s. Winds shift southwesterly and range from 10 to 15 mph approaching the afternoon.

Heat Safety

Picture
As we get deeper into the summer, it's important to remember heat safety and how heat can affect our bodies. To avoid heat-related illnesses, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen regularly to avoid sun burns, and dress in lightweight and light-colored clothing with a wide-brimmed hat.
