Record warmth continues through Monday, heavy rain threat late week

11/6/2022

Along with warmth comes a risk of a shower Sunday

Picture
High pressure offshore controls the air flow and the pattern Sunday into Monday. A southwesterly breeze brings record warmth into the region. Low pressure over Northern Quebec brings a weak cold front through the region Sunday night. The pattern shifts sharply cooler to near season average or slightly below for Election Day Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures rise well above normal again by late week, with a risk of heavy rain from a tropical system for Friday into Saturday.

New records for highs and low maximum temperatures

No matter which climate site that has many decades of data to refer to, new records for daily highs, low maximums, and record highs for the month.

This pattern is remarkably similar to that in November 2020 which brought record highs to the area. The region went through a period between November 5th to the 12th. The data to the left was recorded by my CWOP weather station in Kennebunk. The pattern is similar to the moderate La Niña the region went through then.

Showers possible Sunday afternoon
through Monday morning

Picture
Sunday 1 PM to Monday 1 PM - As the weak frontal boundary approaches the region, it may touch off a few showers with a remote chance of a rumble of thunder as the system passes through. The mountains and north have the best chance. As the parent low over northern Quebec continues northeast, the front runs out of moisture, thus limiting the chances for the coastal plain to receive any rain of benefit.

While it will be mainly cloudy, the tides are good for an afternoon stroll along the oceanside, It will be a bit on the breezy side, but overall, a fair day for most of the area.

Expect breezy conditions to continue overnight through Monday, with gusts in the 20-30 mph range with higher elevations upwards to 40 mph.

Outlook for the week ahead

Picture
Tuesday 7 AM to Sunday 7 AM - Two features to watch in the long range is the brewing tropical trouble over the southeast and how a deep trough over the Midwest captures it and brings it up the coast. This combination could bring some heavy rain to the region Friday into Saturday, along with some gusty wind. Until then, a strong ridge over the region controls the atmospheric traffic with dry conditions and rising temperatures Thursday onward.
