Original post on Facebook#Maine #MEwx SATURDAY March 23rd Update presented by Allspeed Cyclery & Snow...
FOR THOSE IN THE 2-6” COASTAL PLAIN REGION… While it does not look like a big deal for snowfall amounts, ACCUMULATING ICE from FREEZING RAIN and ICE PELLETS in the form of SLEET are a greater concern. There is potential for upwards of ¼-½” of ice accretion from freezing rain and pockets of ice pellets that could dump hard at times. The threat for those increases during the morning and continues into the afternoon. WARM RAIN also mixes in at times closer to the shorelines. Most, if not all, areas end as snow Saturday night, and everything freezes up. WIND INCREASES behind the front in the 30-40 mph range. In areas where ice has accumulated and has not melted or fallen off, it will become a POWER OUTAGE THREAT. Temperatures are expected to warm up above freezing to help melt ice off trees and power lines on Sunday, even though it may not feel like it with the windchill in the 20s all day. PLEASE USE CAUTION SHOVELLING SNOW. Do the bare minimum. It will melt as the week goes along. FOR THOSE IN THE 6-12” FRYEBURG – AUGUSTA – WATERVILLE – BANGOR AREA… The concern for your region is the threat of WET SNOW with some FREEZING RAIN and ICE PELLETS mixed in. As with your neighbors to the south and east, how much falls off trees and power lines dictates how much of a POWER OUTAGE THREAT you may have there. The wet snow that still clings freezes Saturday night. WIND INCREASES overnight into Sunday with wind gusts in the 25-35 mph range, which may be problematic for power outage potential. Temperatures are expected to warm up above freezing on Sunday to help melt off the snow and ice, although the windchill may make it feel like the upper teens to low 20s at times there. PLEASE USE CAUTION SHOVELLING SNOW. Do the bare minimum. It will melt as the week goes along. FOR THOSE IN THE NORTH IN THE 12-24”+ RANGE… A good old-fashioned snow dump. Snowfall rates of 1-2” an hour at times will make it difficult for road crews to keep up. The snow is lighter and fluffier the further north you are located. The WIND INCREASES overnight may cause some BLOWING and DRIFTING of SNOW into Sunday. BELOW ZERO WINDCHILL will likely start the day for the taller peaks, with single digits to teens above likely for the day. WIND GUSTS may range in the 35-45+ range for the higher elevations. FOR ALL: Please use mPING to report your conditions anonymously ► https://mping.nssl.noaa.gov/ and thank you! END TIMES ON SUNDAY: Southern areas between 1 and 3 AM, western and MidCoast areas 2 to 4 AM, central, Bangor & DownEast 3 to 5 AM, and northern areas 4 to 7 AM. The WIND settles in the afternoon on Sunday. CLEAN UP: Temperatures will warm, and there is a chance for RAIN Tuesday into Wednesday to help with melting. The higher sun angle and longer days will also help. Salt and sand are your friends. OUTLOOK: Another storm to watch out for later in the week into Easter weekend. Stay tuned! Thank you, as always, for your support! - Mike |
