Remembering the Blizzard of April 6, 1982With a potentially significant winter storm on the way in the Wednesday to Friday window, looking over its guidance brought back memories as a teenager in Yarmouth. This storm completely shut down the northeast corridor, with upwards of 3 feet of snow in some areas, big wind, thousands lost power, schools were shut down for several days, the shorelines took a beating, and it brought spring to a screeching halt. While it is too early to define the potential magnitude of the storm coming later in the week, there are some intriguing similarities in the setup for this one, comparing the surface map from that day and the forecast map for Thursday morning. I’d say at this point that the potential for most areas to shovel and plow this storm is about 70%. The ingredients are there for it. I know there are longtime Mainers who follow here and remember the 1982 storm. I’d love to read your memories of it. Whether history repeats itself, time will tell, but in the meantime, it would be wise to prepare for this one and stay tuned! – Mike
