Snow squalls and inverted trough to cause problems in some areas

12/18/2019

A holiday break after Wednesday

Picture
One more day of snow activity, a trip to the freezer for a couple of days, and then warmer temperatures heading into next week. We can do this!

Squalls could be feisty
and inverted trough could surprise

Picture
A few snow showers around the region Wednesday morning taper off. An arctic front will pick up the wind, usher in bitter cold temperatures, and blow snow around this afternoon. After the passage of the front, an inversion sets up. It appears that the western mountains down to MidCoast and Bangor region is the likely area for this to occur. Snow could fall heavy at times, cause reduced to no visibility on the roads, and some place could get some bonus inches out of this.
Picture
For the folks in the 1-3" zone area, be on notice you could get little to nothing out of this. You could also wake up to 6". That is the nature of these types of events. Guidance brings the ideas, but results are going to vary as Mother Nature holds the cards and will play them as she chooses. You're on notice for what could happen. If it doesn't, you know why.

Bitter cold through the remainder of the week

Picture
Thursday morning is going to hurt, especially for those in the mountains. The wind slowly subsides into Friday, but it will be bitter cold, regardless. Bundle up if you are headed to the ski hills or outdoors for work or pleasure.

The snow machine continues for the ski hills
into next week

Picture
What you are seeing here is a forecast for upper level energy. It is this feature that will continue to generate snow shower activity in the mountains at times right up into Christmas. This will deliver fresh powder almost on a daily basis, perhaps an inch or two, maybe 3" if it taps into moisture off the Great Lakes. With the cold temperatures, the ski hills will continue to make snow and help rebuild all that was lost in the past week.
